Steering Wheel Replacement

7.8.21

Before and after, replacing the old steering wheel with another from the junk yard. The grip on the "new" wheel was slipping around the metal ring, so I drilled 5 holes in the back of the grip and used a cough medicine syringe to force JB Weld into each of the holes. After curing for 24 hours, it no longer moves around the metal ring.

PLEASE NOTE: Disconnect the battery before removing the airbag.

If you have a cruise control module, the cover pops right off, and the module comes off with a phillips screwdriver. The airbag comes off the wheel with two 10mm bolts, and there's a very delicate electrical connector on the back of the airbag (in some of these trucks, the left 10mm bolt is an anti-theft bolt, so you might have to drill it out if you don't have the right tool).

The center steering wheel nut is 17mm, and the steering wheel will take a good tug to come off the column once the nut is removed.

NOTE: Make sure your steering wheel is dead center when removing so that it's not off center once installed again.
